Woody Allen took on this same subject in To Rome with Love, and in his wisdom understood that as a comedy, a 20 minute segment in a larger movie, was Sufficient; so the directors desire to construct a feature-length drama necessitated addressing the larger questions of why do we create tabloid “Superstars” and why do we so quickly, revel in their fall?
This film has moments that are laugh-out-loud funny, wrapped in a darker tale containing a subplot of who is really the puppeteer and how much control do they hold over the mess that swirls in the wake of their choices.

Traverse City Film Festival 2013.
This is the second year I have had the opportunity to be part of the team documenting this year’s Traverse City film festival. My experience last year was so positive that I was quite happy to hear I was able to return.

There are films that start out small, opening up on a few dozen screens and then hopefully find an audience and grow- These are small-budget Indi films. Summer block-busters with price-tags as large as shopping malls, that open on thousands of screens, are dependent on box-office numbers taking in more than one third of their production costs in the opening week. Disney’s Lone Ranger experienced a disastrous opening weekend.
It seems as if the talent and star-power of Johnny Depp was not enough to carry this western to anywhere near the numbers needed. With production and marketing topping $225 million, the $29 million the film took in domestically in its opening weekend, sets Disney up for yet another major financial flop, joining John Carter and Battleship.
Now it is still possible for the film to gather viewers and move into the black, but that is clearly a long road.

Superman is America. He stands as a symbol of hope and patriotism, and, if director Zack Snyder is to be believed (which I do), the Superman S is the second most recognizable symbol in the world, just after the Christian cross. As if that wasn’t enough, Superman has too many powers. By the time Richard Donner, the director of the original Superman films, was done with him, Superman was out right invincible, prompting Bryan Singer (the director of the 2006 mockery, Superman Returns) to force a situation where Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey in that movie) tried to build an entire continent out of Kryptonite.
In short, reinventing the Man of Steel is no easy feat. Somehow though, Snyder and writers David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan (of the stunning Dark Knight trilogy) have managed to do just that.

The Cannes Film Festival, last night, was the scene of a crime truly worthy of it’s own screenplay. Guardian UK, reported that over One-million dollars worth of jewelry, designed by Chopard was stolen.
The jewelry was to be worn by celebrities to, get this, the premiere of Sofia Coppola’s film
“The Bling Ring. “The police report states that the jewels had been in a security box, located in the hotel room of one Chopard’s employees. One, we assume was sent to assure the expensive items were handed-out to, and then returned from, the celebrities.
French police say the security box containing several pieces from the Swiss luxury jeweler’s collection, was smashed and hauled out of the room the employees.
